🥾West Valley Loop

📍 Circular Route | 9.5 km | 56 m Elevation | ~ 2 hours
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Four Stars of Easy Miles and Big Views

On our first trip to Yosemite, we had just two precious days to soak in as much of this majestic park as possible. That meant choosing activities that packed in maximum landmarks per step. We’d already committed to the Mist Trail on the east side of Yosemite Valley, so for balance (and bragging rights), we wanted something equally spectacular on the west side.

Enter the West Valley Loop: a scenic stroll that promised up-close encounters with icons like El Capitan and Bridalveil Falls. We parked near the Cathedral Beach Picnic Area and made a beeline for the base of El Capitan, expecting it to be the crown jewel of the hike. It did not disappoint.

The sheer size of the granite face, immortalized in the climbing documentary Free Solo, is almost incomprehensible until you’re standing beneath it, craning your neck and spotting the tiny specks of climbers inching their way upward. They were so minuscule we had to point and narrate their exact positions to each other. For those of us who get wobbly standing on anything taller than a kitchen step stool, it was mind-blowing.

We lingered a while, grateful to have both feet firmly on solid ground, before setting off along the loop. At the trailhead, we captured what’s become a family tradition: a photo of the kids with their backs to us, ready to “face the challenge” of the hike. Truthfully, we were just admiring the perfectly mismatched colors of their hydration packs: all the same make, bought at different times, and somehow forming a rainbow lineup. Over the years, we’ve recreated this photo many times, the kids growing taller and the packs looking smaller.

The trail itself is blissfully flat, perfect for long conversations, punctuated by occasional “wow” moments as the Merced River shimmered beside us and granite walls loomed above. We crossed the river a few times, imagining how tempting it would be to take a dip on a warmer day (note to self: bring swimsuits next time). Lunch was a picnic on a sun-warmed boulder in a meadow, the kind of stop where you briefly forget there’s a world outside the valley.

The most memorable part, however, had nothing to do with the scenery. Quinn (former gymnast, all grace and precision) was walking a perfectly flat section of road near Bridalveil Falls when she… vanished. One second upright, the next gone.

We froze, mid-step, staring in disbelief at the spot she’d just been. Except Daniel, who leapt into hero mode, scrambling down the short slope to find Quinn perched astride a very confused sapling. Aside from a few scrapes and a wounded ego, she was fine, though the rest of the hike was punctuated by merciless ribbing. Now, wherever we hike, Quinn is flanked on both sides by “safety marshals.”

Some sections of the West Valley Loop run alongside the road, and on busier days the traffic might slightly distract from the nature soundtrack. But for us, it was a near-perfect way to explore the west side of Yosemite Valley, check off bucket-list landmarks, and enjoy a low-stress family hike before tackling the park’s more demanding trails.

Pro Tip: Bring a camera for El Capitan, a picnic for the meadows, and a friend like Daniel –  just in case someone decides to disappear.
